Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex condition that affects people in very different ways. What works well for one person may not be suitable for another, and treatment plans are often tailored over time by a neurologist or other specialist team.

Management of MS usually focuses on:

• supporting day-to-day function and comfort
• managing relapses or flare-ups
• reducing the impact of symptoms on work, family and social life

Many people living with MS are supported by a combination of approaches such as prescribed medicines, physiotherapy, diet and exercise advice, occupational therapy, psychological support, and strategies such as mindfulness or stress management. Your neurologist or specialist team will advise what is appropriate for your situation.

Research into MS – including its causes and potential new treatments – is ongoing around the world, and new therapies continue to be evaluated in clinical studies.

Where a compounding pharmacist may fit in

Most people with MS will use commercially available, standard medicines prescribed by their neurologist or other specialist. In some situations, your prescriber may choose to involve a compounding pharmacy as part of your wider treatment plan.

Compounded medicines are individually prepared by a pharmacist using ingredients and instructions provided on your prescription. This approach may be considered when your prescriber needs:

• a specific strength that isn’t readily available in a standard product
• a particular combination of prescribed ingredients in one dosage form
• a different dosage form (for example, where swallowing is difficult, or a liquid or topical option is preferred)
• to avoid certain excipients such as particular dyes, preservatives or flavours where possible

Any decision to use compounded medicines is made by your treating neurologist, GP or other specialist, who will consider your diagnosis, other health conditions and the medicines you are already taking.

Working with your healthcare team

At National Custom Compounding, our pharmacists work closely with your medical practitioner to:

• review the prescription and clarify any specific requirements
• prepare the medicine in the strength and dosage form requested
• provide information on how to store and take the medicine safely

Compounded medicines for MS are prescription-only and can only be supplied on the direction of a registered health professional.
