Making medicines easier for animals to take

Anyone who’s ever tried to give a large tablet to a reluctant cat, dog or horse knows it’s not always straightforward. Many animals are quick to detect changes in the taste or smell of their food and can become suspicious of medication hidden in a favourite treat.

Some pets will refuse medicated food altogether, while others may only eat part of the meal, making it difficult to know how much of the dose they’ve actually taken.

Disguising taste, smell and texture

A compounding pharmacist can work with your veterinarian to prepare animal medicines in forms and flavours that may be easier to give.

On your vet’s prescription, we can:

• prepare medicines as easy-to-administer liquids or pastes
• use animal-friendly flavours such as chicken, tuna, beef or peanut butter
• offer sweet flavours such as apple, honey or molasses (commonly used for horses), where appropriate

These options are designed to help improve acceptance and make it simpler for owners and carers to give medicines as directed by the vet.

We regularly work with veterinarians across Australia to support this kind of tailored approach. In many cases, the cost is comparable to standard veterinary medicines, depending on the ingredients and dosage form prescribed. Your vet or our team can provide an estimate before you proceed.

When standard medicines are hard to find

From time to time, veterinary medicines may be temporarily unavailable or discontinued by the manufacturer. When this happens, your veterinarian may consider whether a compounded alternative is appropriate.

In consultation with your vet, we may be able to:

• prepare a compounded version of a prescribed medicine
• supply a specific strength, flavour or dosage form that is not readily available as a commercial product

All compounded veterinary medicines are prepared in our licensed and accredited laboratory, following the prescription and directions provided by your veterinarian.

Working together with your vet

Any decision to use compounded medicines for animals is made by a registered veterinarian, who will consider:

• your animal’s condition and treatment goals
• other medicines or supplements they may be receiving
• the most suitable dosage form and strength
